With Starwood, Platinum members get upgrades to suites when available. Also, many Sheratons and Westins have club lounges which serve breakfast. Platinum members are allowed to club lounges for free, in addition to gym access
I agree that overall I thing SPG has nicer properties globally. However for my mostly business travel I find Hilton Diamond more worthwhile. In fact even for personal travel the hotels are not bad.
My issue as I posted on Flyertalk is the upgrade issues. I do not need a suite when by myself as I spend little time in most rooms. So it offers little value in itself. HH offers free breakfast or Executive floor at most if not all hotels. This is a real value as I own my own company. SPG has exclusions that when I was considering going from SPG Gold to PLT turned me off. They have what they call towers rooms butler and some other special exclusion. I find this a bate and switch sort of. They have created some hotels within the hotel that seem to just remove a valuable PLT advantage in executive floor upgrades. I do not waht to confilct. I had liked the general stated benie as is was all hotels unlike Hilton with the International clause.
