I remember I was once sitting in the exit row of a 757 and noticed part of the wing peel off shortly after takeoff (it was a covering versus an actual part). Myself and adjacent passengers rang the call bell to alert the F/A, who in turn alerted the captain. It must have been a non-issue because the flight deck never even came back to look. Anyway, I was told that if I was concerned about the missing part, I would need to move away from the exit row.

I told the F/A that as long as the flight deck knew about the issue, I wasn't concerned, so I was allowed to stay put.... I sort of see the point, being scared is a form of distraction.
