I've long been a proponent that award seats should be first come, first serve, regardless of elite status level. If the airlines want to make additional award seat inventory available for statused flyers (like UA does with 1Ks), that's fine.....but the base inventory should be open to all. Having a request system like the one recommended by Robert Leach, but with equal access for all, would be welcome.
I have to disagree there. The problem now is that the credit card mile accumulating non-elites who plan 331 days in advance suck award inventory out of the system for "real" flyers, which IMO is a bad thing for "real" flyers.
I think one of the big advantages of elite status is higher placement on waitlists. I don't think that should be changed under my proposed system.
