In the early morning, YUL check-in is mainly busy with charter vacation flights to sun destinations (separate security entrance); there shouldn't be a lot of traffic at the U.S. checkpoint & customs (although US, CO (x2), AA(x3), DL, AC (multiple), and M3 will all have flights around the 6am hour in addition to UA/UX).
I've checked in around 4:45am for U.S. departures at 6am with plenty of time to spare. The starbucks after U.S. customs usually turns out to be the longest wait!
