If you had an upgrade certificate and this happened I would have agreed what the GA did was wrong. Since that wasn't the case, it just wasn't your lucky day.

I was once on a flight from LHR to Toronto in (J) and the GA gave an elderly couple an upgrade and the look on their faces was priceless.
