Overall if these "secret" upgrades are going to occur (we all know they do) then lets implement a system and first upgrade our S/E's and Elites before upgrading a VBIT that's never going to fly on A/C again. Westjet is reserved for these VBITS.
Remember that sometimes there are special cases where it's even nice to see non-status passengers upgraded:
- new couple on honeymoon
- family death / emergency
- screwed over due to bump / cancellation / missed connection
- <insert story>
etc
I guess you shouldn't judge, though I have seen GA make rather poor decisions in the past (as well as very nice / generous ones).
