If the roadside issue is your fault, the company MAY charge you for the service (run out of gas, left the lights on in your car), so when you call em, give no hint as to cause (if known) if its your fault.

In general though, it takes a pretty darn clear cut case for them to charge. In the 5+ (exact number withheld) years I worked for avis, I only charged 6 people, all six were for losing keys or locking the keys in the car. I gave them the option of using any other service to obtain the replacement key at a lesser cost.

Well, anyhow. I've only used it once to jump start my car (after I let the lights on the whole night), and it was free of charge. AVIS forwarded my request to a local Road Assistant company, which came after approximately 45 minutes after my call.
