We sometimes take cold or frozen things home using either a hard-sided cooler or a thick styrofoam cooler with the commercial blue ice (frozen very hard ahead of time). It stays frozen longer than vegetables and doesn't turn into a mess if things go awry. (Though the object of all this attention itself may turn into a mess. For us, once it was smoked salmon that didn't fare too well when a long delay interfered.)
