LH tried to introduce this concept a little while ago on TXL-IAD and stopped it after a couple weeks. It is not easy to fill longhaul flights on point-to-point connections. Each airline may need connecting pax, which are given easily for any existing hub.

IMHO competition is only successful with discounted prices. Nobody can tell me EK can fill HAM-JFK daily just with Hamburgers.
