Those people should avoid EK - I don't think I've ever seen so many "non-merit" upgrades on other airlines.

How is it stealing? If you ask / beg / cry and the airline gives it you, that is completely lawful. I personally always ask, because if I don't, my odds of getting an upgrade are significantly lower. If EK decides to upgrade me instead of a Skywards Gold member, I really shouldn't have to feel guilty at all - EK is at fault not me.

If you, or anyone else, refuse[s] to ask for upgrades at check-in that's fine; I don't see anything wrong with that. But then I also don't see where the complaint lies.
