Some hard-learned lessons from all this:
-present yourself at the counter on 26th floor well before the 9:30AM opening time, as later you will likely find a conspicuous queue (no applications are accepted after noon);
-go to the information counter immediately and take the request papers and fill it (DONT WAIT IN THE QUEUE for it!);
-get an invitation letter from India and one from your company detailing its business and puprose of visit (i lost two days for overlooking this);
-get two properly sized photos;
Generally the manners of personnel (at the booth as well as at the telephone even for very simple questions) are not particularly helpful and borders often to the abrasive, for that reason many people I know prefers if it is the case to request a tourist visa, that can be obtained in one day and requested by a travel agent, while the business requires you to go in person here.
What country's passport were you submitting and were you a local resident at the time of application? I ask because those factors can come into play sometimes. Also, some Indian consulates/embassies have been known to try to not give visas outside the country of residence if the trip is not in the near future.
