Yeah I dislike both TYP and Worldpoints programs. I just think both are pretty close to each maybe I am wrong who knows. What I do know for sure if Citibank gives you opertunities to earn more than 1 point per dollar thus making the rewards a better bang for your buck. But I really thought the reward structure were same basically.
Personally I think that Citi is superior in the following regards:

1. Many cards earn more than one point per $. I earn 2+ per $ on all of my Chairman spending. Just buying gas every two weeks, I earn $40 x .02 points/$ x 26 weeks per year = 6,240 points per year. The earning rate is excellent.
2. The fixed point travel reward option is better than worldpoints, per the above. Its not perfect, but it is better in many cases than trying to book a coach fare in an airline reward program.
3. The merchandise rates are pretty good. I know that this is flyertalk heresy. However, I have enough airline points and hotel miles. I use my TYP for gift certificates and consumer stuff.
4. As an example, I purchased a Tumi computer brief via Citi for approx 32,000 points. It is worth $360 incl tax. Given that my spend was approximately $14,000 to earn these points my reward rate was 2.5% or so.

I know that it has some deficiencies but it works for me.
