I booked them one way to Phoenix on WN, and those are cancelable and become vouchers, no problem there.

His return flight is on US, in a non-refundable fare.

One small mention, about 2 weeks ago US notified him of a schedule change that moved his flight 6 mins. earlier.

Will US offer anything to a person needing to cancel with these circumstances. Refund, voucher, partial refund, partial voucher?

If a terminally ill mother is not a case where US will consider an exception, could he argue that he has busines in Phoenix and they can no longer make the flight because of the schedule change? I know this sounds really sneaky, but I feel aweful that not only is he about to loose his vacation, have to deal with the death of his mother, but also pay for the vacation he doesn't get to take.

I did a search for this information, but could not find any relevant info from post merger days.

Thanks to everyone who has help to offer.
