LAX-EWR, CO actually sells a fair amount of the FC seats because it's great service, but some of the flights are 737, some 757 and sometimes an Int'l (BizFirst) config'd 757 and have fewer FC seats than NW would on connecting flights to NYC. Compared to AA's J to JFK, CO has much less F inventory to EWR. As a NW Plat, UG has never happened to me on a cheapo fare, but did happen back when I was gold on a higher fare. I think mid-range fares could help increase those chances. (If you want more, there are threads on CO LAX-EWR upgrade chances.)
