I guess one option could be to book one seat with the SQ21/22 routing and then wait and then if nothing opens up to book the other one on SQ25 and whatever return routing and then switch the SQ21/22 to that same routing? Do you have status with UA? If you are a 1K you could try it without any change fees, but otherwise the change always costs $100... personally, I would go with SQ25, it's a very nice flight. The upper deck of the 747 is pretty special, and while SQ21 is nonstop, it could be expensive with all the changes.
