I'll tell you how to get around those smart-a$$ cabbies, if you're so inclined: you get in the cab and tell them to take you to an address about ten miles away but on a route that passes directly by the place you want to go. When you get in front of where you want to get out, just yell: STOP THE CAB!!! , GOD-DANG IT, I FORGOT MY DARNED (cellphone, plans, watch, wallet, whatever.). JUST LET ME OUT HERE!!! Than pay him and walk away smacking your forehead and cursing! If you have any acting talent, it's even easier than you think. You can leave a nice tip, if you like. I've had to do this from time to time, and have no compassion for cabbies who refuse short hauls.

Oh, by the way, about 16 miles is the shortest I ever put on a rental car: HNL-Waikiki-HNL.
