Here is what I did on that flight a month ago: got on the upgrade waitlist, cleared at the gate, had a suspicion that the flight was not that full based on research, asked at the gate if I could get 3 seats blocked, was given 3 seats, gave up the upgrade, made someone else happy, and actually layed down and slept for 4 hours. It could not have gone much better than that.
