I did get my camera back, actually... LHR-SFO, we flew on the upper deck. I took my camera out of my bag just before getting off, left it behind and didn't realise it until after crossing immigration. I went to BA baggage services at SFO and told them what I had done; they radioed to someone at the gate, and I had it back within five minutes.
Yours sounds a little more complicated. Best of luck.
