I have seen this happen often in Mexico returning to the States - specifically CUN. You see the screeners get ready at the gate just before boarding begins where they are just waiting to "randonmly" pull aside the first couple of passengers. I always make sure to be 4th or 5th in line so that they are busy with others as I board.
This has been going on three of the last four time I departed from DTW for an international flight. They really like doing secondaries there. They pulled me once and asked where I was going, how long, and what I did for a living. After making chit chat for a few moments the guy said "Ok sir, have a nice trip." I have seen them pull other passengers to the side and give them the royal treatment, searching bags etc.
