I wouldn't say the Amalfi is a luxury hotel, but I enjoyed my stay there, June 1-4 - comfy room, nice service. Continental breakfast is set out in the mornings on each floor - I liked padding down the hall to pick up what I wanted, but this might not be for everyone. Right across the street (Kinzie) is a construction/demolition site...noise is audible on that side but wasn't enough to bother me.
Another poster mentioned the Monaco, where I've also stayed a few times. The two hotels are definitely similar in atmosphere- Amalfi seemed a little newer and cleaner - and quieter - no revelers or roisterers
