While not completely online, I was able to use a mileage upgrade through the "Chat with a Live Agent" feature about a month ago. It was pretty simple. Gave her my confirmation number and she asked if I wanted to upgrade roundtrip or just one way. It showed up immediately on my itinerary and I could change the seat if I wanted to as well.

The hardest part was just getting an available agent.
