Most airports do not have ground radar and can still operate safely in foggy conditions. But it has been speculated that a working ground radar might have helped prevent the accident.

It now looks more likely that Linate's runway scheme and bad markings were a big contributer.

The SAS pilots have now been virtually cleared of any possible fault.
