SAS - the egalitarian airline?

The Danish newspaper Politiken has a headline story in today's paper about SAS eliminating business class on some routes.
Quoting and translating freely:

"According to a confidential strategy paper for 2002, from April 1 SAS will offer less service including no or fewer meals on shorter flights. The service cuts are part of widespread cost-saving measures adopted by the airline.

Flights will be categorised in three distinct service groups: Category 1 includes domestic flights in Scandinavia as well as shorter European flights, Category 2 the remaining European flights, Category 3 the intercontinental flights.

SAS will focus on increasing e-ticket sales on Category 1 flights as well as the use of self check-in."

So, we can probably expect the elimination of business class and service cuts on some European flights {category 1) where it seems SAS is planning to compete hard with competing discount airlines.

With Virgin Express entering the BRU-ARN and BRU-GOT market we are witnessing an interesting shake-up in the industry.
