Don't know how easy it is for Canadians to open bank accounts in the USA, but most US banks have debit cards associated with Mastercard or Visa which you can use for online purchases.

I had to do it the other way around- got a Canadian bank (MBNA) mastercard only after sending them a copy of my US credit report... now it's mailed to my US address without any problems.
