Point is air transportation is just as valid as any other means of transportation, and is arguably, the global standard. Ships going across the ocean are mainly for luxury travel and fill a niche market at best. This isn't 1912 with weekly crossings of the ocean.
Then again, if it were, I'm sure TSA would be searching for icebergs because one sunk the Titanic.

Niche market or not its still an alternative, just an inefficient and unpalatable one to you.
