Checking in for US at LAX isn't a problem usually. The long lines you see outside of T1 are due to all of the Southwest flights. Also, the lines look considerable longer because airport staff hold passengers at the botton of a stairway before releasing you to the security lines at the top of the stairway/escalator. This usually results in passengers spilling out onto the street in front of T1.
