BA flights (in my experience) always go from somewhere around gates 36-40, a long walk but no security control.

No the arm rest doesn't lift.
As far as I remember (often difficult due to champagne usage...) the arm rest does lift (on AY 320s) except on row 1 due to the tray tables. But even then the legroom remains awful.
