If you have the choice, I'd go through Delaware and along the coast. Even if it winds up taking the same amount of time, you'll have much nicer scenery and a less stressful drive.
I don't agree that it is always a mess. However, change the times to 3 pm -7:30 pm or 6 am to 10:30 am. I don't know what the Delaware route is like, but it's probably the better way to go.
