Taking a ferry in cochin / ernakulam is usually better than driving .. but that means you need to take an "auto" (local 3 wheeler, kind of like a tuktuk in bkk) to the ferry and another one from the ferry to where you want to go. Far cheaper than hotel cars, and I do think they use the meter in kochi (some places in India, like MAA, the rates haven't been adjusted in years and even when they're adjusted the auto drivers claim they're too low, refuse to use meters.. long story)
