Unfortunately what has been posted is correct. The one airline I find has relatively reasonably priced economy tickets that allow for an upgrade is United. You can upgrade from H class and higher with them. But that doesn't help you when you have Delta miles.

Northwest is even worse - only "B" and "Y" classes are upgradeable.
