We need help from the experts!

Hi,

We are trying to plan a trip to Greece for our Honeymoon.

Our plan was to purchase a coach fare on Delta and use our Delta Sky Miles to upgrade our tickets. We have been told that we can only upgrade "Delta" flights, not Delta flights (operated by Air France, Aitalia, etc.).

We have also been told that only certain coach fares will be available to upgrade. Only certain flights have these upgradable fares available. And these particular "high-end coach service fares" - are simply more expensive coach fares. They are much more expensive than a typical coach fare. For example, when we do a search on Delta for a coach ticket to Athens roundtrip the price may be around $1200 (with tax), on the phone I was told the flights available to upgrade on these same days would be $2200 - $2400! Which is too much for us.

Basically, we have never done this before and would REALLY appreciate any help...are we missing something? Is there an easier way? What should our strategy/game plan be? Or are we simply out of luck?

If it helps, we are planning to fly from Boston to Athens roundtrip, Oct. 1 to Oct. 13. We want to upgrade the trans-atlantic portions of the trip. We have 60,000 sky miles right now and are tied in through our AmEx card.

Thanks in advance to any and all help!
