In addition to stage length, aircraft size drives the numbers. RJ's are more epxensive to operate on a per seat mile basis. As a general rule, the larger the aircraft, the lower the seat mile costs. Though, the 787 changes this equation. Eqivelent or lower seat mile costs than aircraft twice it's size..if it delivers the promoised numbers.
