I have been there 13 times, and I find that 8 days is about right. Your kids will find friends easily and have a great time. Getting out to the volcano and all that other stuff is more for the benefit of the adults, IMHO.
Don't use the HWV as a base. When you stay there, stay there. Pick someplace cheaper if you're going to be out touring all day. But aside from the volcano, worth seeing at least once, I think you may regret spending whole days away from the hotel.
