We did see two connecting deluxe rooms at FS NY, and it was definitely as you describe - just two rooms next to each other with a door between them. The rooms were long and narrow, which didn't help. It was definitely awkward.
That's actually why we chose to upgrade to the 2BR suite at FS - the layout of the connecting rooms was really awkward, especially with two young children. The 2BR (1BR with connector) was not awkward at all. It was, however, very long. It was pretty much one long hallway with all the rooms off the hallway. But, it felt better for us. The jump in price was enormous, but we felt much more comfortable.
Gotcha...
though as a generality I meant to communicate that I would choose a non-connector option over a connector option. That point of view is amplified in the case of two regular rooms vs. a suite & a room as you have pointed out.
