Is there a way to get the GA to "up" my fare class one level? If there is a small cost, then it might be worth it to get the extra EQMs (trans-con flight).

It's an NW-issued ticket (ticket # starts with 012...)? If so, then call NWA reservations at 1-800-225-2525 and ask the agent to see if there is any availability in any B-class fare and what is the cheapest of those fares they could bump you into. Don't be afraid to tell them why you want to do this, either. Nothing shady about it. They're perfectly capable of doing this and will do it, however it may be a little more than a "small cost". Just FYI.
