Even if you unlocked the phone- it would not work correctly. Many of the features of the iPhone are server (backend) controled. So the phone might be able to make calls on another network but all the feature would not work. This would also apply to anyone in the US that does get the phone from AT&T and travels a lot as the phone would be roaming on a different system.
To my knowledge, only the enhanced voicemail is dependant on the backend server and everything else is based on ordinary standards. And ordinary voicemail will work, you will not just receive the voicemail messages directly to your phone but you have to call to your voicemail box to hear the messages.
Photos will be synchronised from iPhoto just like with iPod, no need for backend server. Music, same thing. Email, standard Internet access and standard servers available. Browsing, standard Internet access required.
Or is there some other secret features, which will require backend servers?
