Seating Rules for Baby in Car Seat

Sorry if this question has already been been answered, but I couldn't find it via search. My wife and I will be traveling with our 1 year old daughter. She is ticketed and will be in her car seat. On a 767-300 in coach class, am I allowed to book the 3 center seats and place my daughter in the middle? If not, do I need to book a window seat for my daughter? For the future, what are the rules for seating with car seats in widebodies in general? For narrowbodies, I believe only window seats are permitted.

Also this past weekend we went PIT to ORD on a CRJ700 in coach with my daughter as a lap child. The FA told my wife that babies are only allowed on the right side of the plane. I never heard of that before and it doesn't seem correct to me. As long as we're not in an exit row, shouldn't we be okay? By pure luck I had chosen seating on the right side of the plane.
