Yes, you need award availability to use the RTW. If a flight is cancelled, your rebooked on another; no need to find new availability in that fare class. It would be NW's responsibility.

Also be aware that reward RTW are usually restricted to a small number of stopovers. I beleive DL is 6. An award RTW and a real RTW are totally different animals, if you ask me.
