Don't get me wrong, the A340 is a modern plane, but the need for 4 engines is not there anymore. The 330 is a much better plane and it's still selling. The problem is the range of the A330-300, the 330-200 has range, but it's too small for Finnair
The 777 is NOT old technology, it's still selling like hot cakes and is the most economical plane in it's size. Boeing will be selling the 777 for years. Finnair didn't buy it because it's too big for them.
B777 is old tech compared to A350 - do we agree?
Airbus was natural choice for pilot training as well. Similar cockpit environment in all Airbus series that AY has - not like SAS where almost all different kind of AC model available in their fleet

.
A340-300E consumes 20% less fuel than MD11 does and has higher MTOW compared to the non enchanced A340 version (more cargo).
A330 will be used for the JFK route (at least).
