Thank you for the experiences. I'll give this some more thought (the BD flight up front didn't seem like anything special, but then it didn't cost much as it was part of a Canada-Europe itinerary).

For some strange reason, all TP's really cheap fares disappeared at once (everything <U$500), which makes it a little harder to decide to fly in the back.
