This is a common confusion. The free Platinum Credit Card does reduce the fee to zero and costs nothing. This was the case when I first took out the card, and is still the case now given a mate who took out the card 2 weeks ago.
Note you do need to have held the companion cards for 6 months - this is a fairly new requirement, but it is enforced
Your mate was lucky as the Platinum Credit Card isn't shown on the UK Amex site anymore...though it is available at other locations like Singapore. Platinum Charge Card is still active of course.
Amex Gold or Green Charge Card at annual fee of £30 gets the BA Amex Premium Plus Card in your wallet.
