Here's my take:

I think it's important that we be courteous to others and that we don't inconvenience others, BUT that we do what makes US comfortable too... so in this barefoot situation, I wouldn't go barefoot if I'm wearing shoes that clamp air in it, because then air would release and it would stink, but I'd maybe remove the shoe and put a blanket around my feet until I have to walk to the bathroom or whatever. If I'm using flip-flops, it'd be safe to remove them... but I DEFINITELY wouldn't walk barefoot (or even with socks) to the bathroom--alot of germs!

I'm usually very independent and I don't really care what others think, to an extent, but in this case--it's common sense. =)

Just my two pennies.
