Taxes on reward stays are to be paid by the property/MR in the US, not the guest. When booking in the US, you get this message on the page before committing:
Using your points will cover your room charge and tax, and no additional service charges or resort fees will be applied.
Note that the quote above was taken from a Courtyard redemption that I have booked. The message may change for those properties that do have a resort charge applicable to them as this property does not.
As for the amount, I have had similar amounts show on the bill for reward redemption with Marriott properties, but have never had them charged to me.
