If the difference is that great, it may be a matter of the previous rates being an error. Hotels have the right to correct errors in their published rates and don't have to honor them. However, it would be odd for them to cancel them without telling the OP (of course we don't know the entire story, so it's possible that they did tell him something along these lines).
