Strictly speaking that is true. However, what airlines like LH do in cases like that: they re-calculate the fare to a oneway (since you haven't used the return trip) and will ask you to pay that amount, deducting only the amount they owe you for tax refund. It's nasty, possibly illegal, but that's what they do.
