Was it ordered with mobile broadband? It could just be a simcard slot for a non-installed broadband module. Does the software for the module show up on the machine? Try entering the service code of the machine and see if it lists the option as installed.

Unless it was ordered with it, my money is on it just being the reader that leads nowhere.
