I know you want the issue ignored, but there is no rule against importing food to India.

Foreign tourists with moderate amounts of luggage are invariably waved through the green line---unless they have foolishly declared on the form that they are carrying gifts of value over Rs. 8000 (about 100 GBP), which is the current legal limit for foreigners not of Indian origin. Of course I am not for one moment suggesting that you make a false declaration on the customs form...
