And if SQ really doesn't trust local security, then why don't they check every flight coming from those destinations?

The weapons security type inspection they conduct on arrival isn't going to locate most drug shipments, if that's what they are looking for.

If they were really concerned about security and didn't trust the locals, wouldn't it make more sense for SQ to put its own secondary security screen in the gate area?

I don't find it amusing in the slightest. In fact, I find it downright annoying.
After arrival the passengers are free to roam in the terminals. Who says it is SQ that requests the extra security on arrival? Likely it is Singapore security/customs? Are they allowed to install their own security in airports in other countries - I wouldn't expect so, most countries would treat that as a breach of sovereignty.
