I have often asked myself the same question as the OP as I really do not know where to head to for a few days, except I want to get away.
And I do not agree with your categorising Cat 1 and 2 hotels as "low-ends". Depending on locations, some Cat 1 & 2 hotels in Asia are far nicer than some Cat 5 & 6 in Europe or even US; eg
Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur was only Cat 1 and now Cat 2, this hotel would easily be Cat 6 or 7 had it been located in Italy !
To the OP, I would recommend the brand new
Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu which is Cat 1. Nice rooms, free breakfast for plats and nice seaview from lounge ;and if you feel like taking a break from your "work" you can always do a day trip to one of the nearby islands. Direct flights from KUL, SIN and HKG !
As for myself, I am going to check-out the
Le Meridien Nirwana Bali next month. I have been to Bali numerous times but a Cat 1 resort next to the Tanah Lot temple is too hard to resist
