Umm, premium economy?

I don't think anyone who's not filthy rich, funded by expat packages, or otherwise sane would spring for the $10k QF transpacific business class fares when the price can be reduced by as much as 50% going via BKK on TG, JL via NRT etc. Ok $8k is not as bad as $10k but still....

Want to have your cake and eat it too? The way I'm approaching it is to redeem my miles on an award to somewhere with cheap tickets, and get a cheap DONEx or AONEx from there. About US$6500ish for a DONE4 out of NRT and you're allowed 20 segments - meaning about 300 bucks per segment in business! That's including a JFK-SYD segment. Then you can pull your DONEx apart, throw in several repositioning award tickets/cheap tickets and you can have 3 or 4 different trips for the price of one DONEx! Of course whether this works or not depends on whether you're a chronic planner like me...
